EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — On Monday, Burges High School introduced Bernie Luna as their new head football coach.
Luna had been on staff with the Mustangs for seven seasons, most recently serving as the defensive coordinator last season under former head coach James Routledge.
Routledge stepped down following the end of last season after seven years at the helm to become an assistant athletic director at El Paso Independent School District.
Luna has been in coaching for 18 years now, but this opportunity is his first as a head coach at the high school level.
"It means a lot to me, this was a goal to reach," said Luna. "I applied for the job when coach Routledge got it and he kept me on staff, was a mentor and helped me prepare for this day. Burges has always made me feel at home, I feel loved and part of the family."
The Mustangs went 3-7 last year, the only season without a playoff berth under Routledge and while Luna was on the staff.
