SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — Wild on Ice, the horse that won the 2023 Sunland Park Derby, was euthanized Thursday morning.
The Texas-bred horse and Kentucky Derby hopeful injured its hind leg in an early morning training session and was transferred to the surgical facility in Lexington, Kentucky for further evaluation. The injury however was too severe and the horse had to be euthanized.
Wild on Ice was trying to become the first horse from Texas to win the Kentucky Derby since 1950. Wild on Ice is owned by Frank Sumpter of Lamesa, Texas.
This comes after last year's Sunland Park Derby winner, Slow Down Andy was also pulled from last year's Kentucky Derby.
