Aggie freshman named All-American
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its Freshman All-American list on Monday. On top of a stellar rookie season, NM State’s Nick Gonzales earned the nod as a NCBWA Second-Team Freshman All-American.
Gonzales was a pivotal piece for the Aggies all season long playing in 57 of the team’s games and starting in 53. The second baseman led the team in batting average at .347 that included 17 doubles, two triples and nine home runs. The freshman posted a conference-leading .596 slugging percentage and had 40 runs scored with 36 runs batted in.
The Vail, Ariz. native was a vital part of the Aggies middle infield that helped the team set a new single-season record for fielding percentage at .977. Gonzales also helped lead NM State to its first WAC Tournament title in program history and first trip to the NCAA Regionals since 2012.
This award for Gonzales now adds to his list after a standout rookie season that saw him named a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and to the All-WAC First-Team.
