Local track star jumps ship; shuns Navy for Army
As far back as she can remember, Montwood High School track star Haley Gonzalez wanted to serve her country. When she was 10, it was her dream to someday enlist in the U.S. Navy.
Then, this past summer, after being named an All-American in the seven events of the heptathlon, her dream came true. She was offered a full scholarship to the U.S.Navy.
"I was, like, whoa, this is really happening,” Gonzalez said.
But all of a sudden, Haley jumped ship. She was offered a full scholarship to the U.S.Army.
"I thought my dream had come true, but then I visited West Point and I fell in love,” Gonzalez said.
“She calls me from West Point and says, 'I think we have a problem, I love this place,'"said her mother, Lori Gonzalez.
Haley has yet to tell the Navy that she is instead going to accept a scholarship to Army.
“I’m still trying to find the right words to tell them.”
