Legendary Eastwood HS coach retires after 52 years with Troopers
He is simply one-of-a-kind. Legendary basketball Coach Gary Pippen is retiring after 52 years at Eastwood High School.
"I refer to myself as the last dinosaur," Pippen tells CBS4 Sports Director Lou Romano. "I can't tell you how many kids I've had the pleasure of teaching and coaching over the years, but it's been a great ride."
Pippen began coaching basketball at Eastwood in 1966. He was an assistant coach under Bobby Lesley on the great 1976 state championship team, which to this day, is the only public high school in El Paso to have won a state basketball championship.
He took over the job at Eastwood in 1993 when Lesley retired. "The time has finally come to say 'odios,' and ride into the sunset," says a teary-eyed Pippen.
It'll be hard to find another Gary Pippen in El Paso or anywhere else.
