Local athletes sign with universities
Some local athletes signed to play at the college level Wednesday afternoon.
Montwood track star Haley Gonzalez signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. Gonzalez was named an all-American this past summer in the heptathlon. She will complete her senior season in the spring.
Coronado swimmer Miriam Guevara signed with Northwestern University in Illinois. Guevara was one of the most-recruited swimmers in the country this year. She even represented Mexico in the Junior World Tournament this summer. Guevara’s main events are the 100 and 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley.
El Paso High School volleyball player Emily Perez signed with the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio. She is in the top ten of her class, a two-time district MVP and an all-state honorable mention selection.
Also signing today were Eastlake High School sofball players Kasey Flores and Sky Etrada. They will be attending UTEP. Flores is a third baseman who batted .548 with 17 homeruns and 70 RBIs.
Estrada is a second baseman who batted .545 with 14 doubles, two triples and four homeruns. She was also a two-time first team all-district selection in 2016 and 2017.
