Rival Aggies spoil debut of interim coach Phil Johnson

Phil Johnson lost his interim coaching debut to rival New Mexico State, 80 to 60.

EL PASO - TX (CBS4) Rival New Mexico State defeated UTEP Thursday at the Don Haskins Center, ruining the interim coaching debut of UTEP's Phil Johnson.

Aggie guard A.J. Harris led NMSU with 18 points and four Aggies scored in double figures as NMSU swept the season series for the 3rd straight year, winning 80-60.

"I was extremely disappointed with our effort," said Johnson after the game. "I'm not going to name any names but we have a lot of work to do."

No UTEP player scored in double figures but four players each scored nine points.

The loss was the sixth straight for UTEP (1-6) after winning their season opener. NMSU improved to 5-1.

The Miners host old WAC rival New Mexico on Saturday night. NMSU is home against Prairie View A&M Sunday at 4pm.
